Border Crossers students have created two canvas murals as culminating social action projects. Both murals, which were created in partnership with artists from Groundswell Community Mural Project (http://www.groundswellmural.org/) are available on-lend with a mini-curriculum to schools and community organizations. Please contact us at (212) 533-1488 if you are interested in borrowing one of the murals.
This 5 by 8 foot canvas mural visually depicts issues of tracking, testing, school segregation, and school funding inequity which students synthesized from a year-long study on schools and borders.
This two-panel mural was designed and created by students to take social action by teaching others about curriculum themes of discrimination and borders about which they had been learning. As part of the preparation for this mural, Border Crossers students did research on Jackie Robinson, learned about Eddie Klep, a white baseball player who played in the Negro Leagues, read a story about girls' sports and discrimination, and did an activity to think about what it is like to be a left-handed in a right-handed world.
