Year-Long Partnerships with Elementary Schools

Committed to Racial Justice

What is the RJIS initiative? The Racial Justice in Schools (RJIS) initiative provides public district elementary schools in NYC with the opportunity to receive one year of intensive professional development to advance racial justice at their institutions. Through training, assessment and customized coaching, schools will gain strategies and resources to build culture, practices, and policies grounded in racial justice and equity. Participating schools will join a cohort of educators and schools that are actively building an anti-racism practice in their communities. This initiative, funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, will be offered free of charge to six selected public district elementary schools.

What does RJIS entail?  The RJIS initiative consists of three phases over the course of one year, which includes training, assessment and action.

Criteria: Schools who fit the following criteria are eligible to apply for the RJIS Initiative:

  • Be a public, district elementary school in New York City serving K-5 students
  • Demonstrate commitment to equity work: Be able to share what steps school has already taken to further diversity, equity and/or racial justice work, and/or a clear purpose for this work moving forward.
  • Willingness to establish a Racial Equity Team: Create a team of 4-6 school community members, including at least one classroom teacher, one administrator, and one non-teaching staff member. Team will serve as the main point of contact with Border Crossers and oversee the RJIS project work at the school. Each team must commit 2-4 hours per month for RJIS project work.
  • Willingness to Commit to Time: 1) One full-day of professional development for racial equity team on August 14, 2018; 2) One full-day of professional development for entire school team on either September 5 or November 6, 2018; 3) 2-4 hours per month of project work by the Racial Equity Team.
